Our Health Journey

We’ve Been There

We have been on a health journey together for 10 years now. Lizzie’s desire to become healthy stemmed from severe gut and body image issues and Billy’s stemmed from some scary inflammatory markers he got in his early twenties. We faced a choice to either start taking prescription medications that treated symptoms or figure out what is at the source of the problem and adjust our lifestyles accordingly. We chose the latter, thus putting us on the path we are still on today. 

During those initial years Lizzie obtained a personal training certification through NASM and has since became a certified health coach through Precision Nutrition. Billy has read every book and all the research he can get his hands on and consulted with dozens of different Doctors. While we are far from perfect, we are currently as healthy as we have ever been. Through trial and error, we have created a healthy lifestyle as a family that is simple, sustainable, and even fun. We are passionate about showing others that creating a healthy lifestyle doesn't have to be confusing and complicated. We'd love to show you how we've done it and help you along your own health journey.

Lizzie

Being active and playing sports was a huge part of my childhood and my family culture. Despite that, I remember sitting in elementary school thinking I was fat or looked funny. I would do extra workouts when I would come home from basketball practice. I was always on a diet, I remember reading food labels and looking for food that had no fat in it (ie Cheerios and Slim Fast). These might sound like good habits, but I was doing it from a very unhealthy mindset. I was too young to have those concerns. I feel so sad that I spent my fun childhood years being on a “diet” thinking I was fat and ugly.

During these years I was also on antibiotics for acne. This led to gut issues that often included extreme cramping after nearly every meal. I was completely confused about what was healthy and what was not. I was missing a lot of information and didn’t know where to find it.

I met my husband in my early twenties. Our first few years of marriage were fun, but stressful with work and school, so my stomach issues continued to get worse. I actually became a certified personal trainer during those years and was convinced that I just needed to out exercise my health issues. However, through watching my clients struggle I realized that health starts in the kitchen not the gym. You can’t out exercise an unhealthy lifestyle. This was the beginning of my journey to heal my gut and learn everything I possibly could about having a healthy diet and lifestyle.

I am currently in the best health of my life and I no longer deal with gut issues. I still fight the body image demons, but I have developed a much healthier mindset in dealing with them. I am so grateful for my path and have learned to love the process of learning and improving. I do everything I can to be the healthy person I want my kids to become. This includes Mental, Emotional, Physical, and Spiritual health. I am passionate about showing families that a healthy lifestyle doesn’t need to be complicated and hard. We have figured out how to make it simple and fun. We’d love to show you how.  


Billy

My health journey began when I was a little kid. My Dad has dealt with chronic illness off and on for most of my life. This was really hard to see because my Dad was an athlete and is an outdoor enthusiast. In an effort to help him, my Mom was proactive in seeking answers that traditional MD’s were unable to provide. Because of my Mom’s example and my fear of dealing with a chronic illness like my Dad, when I got a standard physical as a 25-year-old and was told I needed to be on a statin for “high cholesterol” it was ingrained in me to ask questions.

This put me on the path that I am still on today and will be on for the rest of my life. That is, achieving health and wellness primarily through simple diet and lifestyle optimizations. I never took the statin and as a 34 year old I’m in the best shape of my adult life.

I’ve dabbled in tons of popular diet methodologies and experimented with dozens of exercise philosophies. I’ve learned from all of these experiences and currently apply different aspects of each of them, as they make sense for me personally.

I’m passionate about showing others that living a healthy lifestyle doesn’t have to be complicated or confusing. Living a healthy lifestyle should be simple and enjoyable. Creating innovative delicious and healthy food has become one of my greatest joys in life.
